Southeastern’s Zach James was named the GAC male athlete of the year

DURANT–Southeastern‘s Zach James closed out the spring award season by earning the Great American Conference Male Athlete of the Year for the 2017-18 season.

James, a junior from Whitesboro, Texas, recently earned Division II PING First Team All-American recognition from the Golf Coaches Association of America a week after being named an All-Central Region honoree, and was also tabbed as a finalist for the DII Jack Nicklaus Award presented by Barbasol.

He took home the GAC honor by winning a vote of the league’s sports information directors among 12 nominees for the honor.

In addition he took home Southeastern’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete honor on the heels of an individual Great American Conference title, a GAC Golfer of the Year nod and a first team all-conference selection.

James’ 2017-18 honors continue to add to a resume that already features a GAC Newcomer of the Year award as well as two previous all-conference honors.

He was a five-time GAC Golfer of the Week during the 2017-18 season and boasts a 70.72 average score over 32 rounds in 12 tournament played this season. He has turned in 21 rounds at par of better, 10 of them in the 60s with three tournament victories, including a GAC crown, a Regional Runner-Up, and a finish of sixth of better in every event of the season.

James finished 26th at the NCAA Championship, posting the highest national finish by an SE player, and helped the Savage Storm to its highest national finish in 10th.
