CLAREMORE– The Rogers State women’s cross country team ranked sixth in the 2018 Heartland Conference Women’s Cross Country Preseason Poll as announced by the league on Thursday.
The poll is determined by the votes of the Heartland’s coaches and sports information directors.
The Hillcats totaled 52 votes to take sixth place in the eight-team poll. RSU returns five letterwinners from the 2017 team that finished sixth at the 2017 Heartland Conference Championships in Wichita, Kansas. Along with the returners, head coach Chris McCormick, the 2017 Heartland Conference Coach of the Year for the men’s team, added four freshmen ready to make an early impact in the 2018 season.
Dallas Baptist University was picked to win the Heartland Conference for the 12th-straight season, earning 15 of the 16 first-place votes and 127 overall points. The Patriots return four all-conference performers from a season ago.
St. Edward’s edged out Newman for the second spot in the poll with 94 total points and one first-place vote. Newman was picked to finish third in 2018 with 93 total points.
Lubbock Christian finished fourth in the preseason poll with 76 points followed by Texas A&M International (68) in fifth. After the Hillcats ranked Oklahoma Christian (38) and UAFS (28).
The Heartland Conference will crown its champion at the 2018 Heartland Conference Championships on Nov. 3 in Laredo, Texas.
RSU opens the 2018 season on Sept. 1 at the UCO Land Run in Edmond.
