KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Northeastern State football team is predicted to finish in 11th place according to the MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media Poll.
The release on Tuesday was in conjunction with the league’s Media Day at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City.
Northeastern State received 19 points in the coaches’ poll and 66 in the media poll.
Northwest Missouri was the favorite to win this year’s MIAA crown in both polls. The Bearcats edged out Fort Hays State by one point in the coaches’ poll with 103 but had one fewer first place vote with four.
The Tigers, who are this year’s defending MIAA Champions, had five of the 11 possible first place tallies by the league coaches.
Central Missouri had the two remaining first place votes and were picked third with 96 points. Pittsburg State came in fourth for the second consecutive year with 81 points, while fifth was tied with Emporia State and Central Oklahoma obtaining 67 points.
Washburn was seventh receiving 63 points and Lindenwood following in eighth with 46 points.
Missouri Western came in ninth in the poll with 40 points and Nebraska-Kearney is tenth with 30 points.
Following NSU in the poll in 12th was Missouri Southern who had 12 points.
The media poll reflected the coaches’ poll in top four spots but differed with Emporia State ahead of Central Oklahoma for sixth place; Missouri Western was a slot ahead of Lindenwood in eighth.
The RiverHawks open camp on Aug. 6 for their first practice on the field and will open the season Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. playing host to Emporia State.
