OKLAHOMA CITY–Energy FC won their second straight match by downing Rio Grande Valley FC 3-1 at Taft Stadium on Saturday evening.
Energy FC controlled the first few minutes of the match and following an Omar Ontiveros yellow card in the 5th minute, Jon Brown was awarded a free kick just outside of the penalty area. Following that, Rio Grande Valley controlled much of the play which culminated in a goal by the aforementioned Ontiveros in the 15th minute.
As they did in their last match, Energy FC responded. Following a scramble in the penalty area, Jon Brown freed the ball from the RGV keeper and got it to Jose Barril. Then, Barril sent it toward the center of the penalty area where it bounded off a defender, right to Jaime Siaj who buried it in the 21st minute.
The remainder of the half saw the teams trade opportunities, but neither team could punch home a goal.
The Greens took the lead in the 53rd minute when Callum Ross scored his second of the season. Philip Rasmussen served a perfect ball into the penalty area from a corner kick and Ross was there to head the ball in the net.
Energy FC stood tall in the latter moments of the second half, withstanding six corner kicks in the second half. None more important than the final corner kick of the match in stoppage time.
Following the service by RGV, the ball was headed out of danger by Energy FC defender Shawn McLaws. Because it was near the end of the match, RGV goalkeeper Nicolas Corti was forward in the box. After the header, Energy FC forward Miguel Gonzalez collected the ball and raced the full length of the field toward the empty net. He sidestepped one defender and was able to leisurely place the ball in the net. The goal was his first of the season.
Energy FC’s defense withstood a potent RGV attack that fired 17 shots goalward and had 12 corner kicks on the night. The 12 corner kicks is the most in franchise history by an Energy FC opponent.
After going 13 games without scoring multiple goals in a match, Energy FC has scored multiple goals in back-to-back matches, both wins.
The week was full for Energy FC as they played three matches in just over six days, with two of them on the road. The Greens collected six of nine points.
After a tough week, Energy FC plays just once next week, at home Saturday against LA Galaxy II at 7:30 p.m.
