WACO, Texas – The 2017 Heartland Conference champion Rogers State men’s cross country team was picked to finish second in the 2018 Heartland Conference Men’s Cross Country Preseason Poll the league announced on Wednesday.
The poll is determined by a vote of league coaches and sports information directors.
RSU earned the second spot in the poll with four first-place votes and 113 total points. The 2017 Heartland Conference Coach of the Year, Chris McCormick, returns two All-Heartland Conference First Team selections in senior Seth Whittington and junior Colton Green along with six other Hillcats from the 2017 Heartland Conference championship team.
The navy and red edged Dallas Baptist University in the 2017 Heartland Conference Championship in Wichita, Kansas to capture the league title for the first time. RSU advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship and finished just outside the top 25 in the race.
DBU was picked No. 1 in the preseason poll with 11 more points than the Cats. The Patriots totaled 12 first-place votes and 124 total votes. DBU returns three All-Heartland selections from its 2017 team that placed second at the league championship.
Oklahoma Christian earned the third sport in the preseason poll with 92 total votes. OC finished in third at last year’s championship. Lubbock Christian enters the season ranked fourth in the Heartland with 72 points followed by Newman (60 points), St. Edward’s (50 points), Texas A&M International (41 points) and UAFS (24 points).
The Heartland Conference will crown its champion at the 2018 Heartland Conference Championships in Laredo, Texas on Nov. 3.
The Hillcats begin the 2018 campaign on Sept. 1 at the UCO Land Run in Edmond, Oklahoma.
