TULSA–Five NCAA Tournament teams from the 2017 season highlight the 2018 Tulsa women’s soccer schedule, as announced today by Head Coach Kyle Cussen. The Golden Hurricane slate will also feature eight teams that posted double-digit wins, home matches against both the American Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champion, and crosstown rival Oral Roberts.
The five NCAA Tournament participants on the schedule include Missouri State, Oklahoma State, Rice, UCF and USF, while UCF concluded the year ranked 17th in the final United Soccer Coaches poll.
Tulsa will begin the season with a pair of home games, including intrastate rival Oklahoma State (Aug. 16) and interstate rival Missouri State (Aug. 19). The Cowgirls had the most wins in 2017 on this year’s schedule with a 16-4-3 mark, winning the Big 12 regular season championship and advancing to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
MSU posted 10 wins, claimed the Missouri Valley Conference tournament championship and played in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. OSU has a 5-2 lead in the all-time series with TU, while the Golden Hurricane owns a 13-5-2 series lead over the Bears.
Up next for Tulsa is the Oklahoma Invitational, where TU will face Cal State Northridge (Aug. 24) and Illinois State (Aug. 26). Both the Matadors and Red Wolves tallied nine wins a year ago, while CSUN was the Big West runner-up. Cal State Northridge won the only previous meeting with Tulsa, a 1-0 decision at home in 2013, and this will be the first meeting between TU and ISU.
Tulsa returns home to host Arkansas State (Aug. 31) and Sam Houston State (Sept. 2) before participating in the Rice Invitational and taking on Louisiana Lafayette (Sept. 7) and Rice (Sept. 9). The Rice Owls registered 12 wins, won the Conference USA regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament First Round last season, while the ASU Red Wolves picked up nine victories, the Bearkats earned seven the Ragin’ Cajuns posted five wins a year ago.
TU comes home to the friendly confines of the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium for a four-game stretch to host crosstown rival Oral Roberts (Sept. 14), Kansas State (Sept. 16), and American Athletic Conference foes ECU (Sept. 20) and Cincinnati (Sept. 23). The UC Bearcats totaled 12 wins last season, while ORU captured eight wins, but battled Tulsa to a 1-1 double-overtime tie, and the Wildcats and Pirates each had six wins.
TU has an 18-4-6 lead in the all-time series with the Golden Eagles, and this will be the first meeting with KSU.
The Hurricane will play five of its seven games in October on the road. TU will start with a pair of road contests at SMU (Oct. 4) and Houston (Oct. 7). The Mustangs had 10 wins last year, but it was Tulsa that came out on top in a 3-2 overtime win at home, while the Cougars earned seven victories.
The last home stretch of the regular season could prove to be the toughest as Tulsa hosts USF (Oct. 11) and UCF (Oct. 140. The Bulls captured the American Athletic Conference tournament championship, recorded 13 wins and advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, while the Knights claimed The American regular season championship, also earned 13 wins and played in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.
Road games at Temple (Oct. 18), UConn (Oct. 21) and Memphis (Oct. 26) conclude the regular season slate. The Tigers finished the season with 11 wins and fourth in The American, while the Huskies totaled seven victories and the Owls had six.
The American Championship is scheduled to begin with the quarterfinals on Oct. 31, with the semifinals on Nov. 2 and the Championship set for Nov. 4.
