The Wichita Falls, Texas, native currently boasts a 4.00 GPA in biology and has been a standout on the Tigers cross country and track & field teams for the last three seasons. Filer continues his academic honors for 2017-18 after being named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 7 team (second-straight season) and ECU’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

This year he had a strong performance at the cross country championships before tragically falling due to injury. He rebounded quickly and had a highlight year in track & field, earning the ECU Male Track Athlete of the Year award.
Filer ended his season at the Oxy Invitational in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:12.28), missing all-region honors and a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field championships less than a second.

Filer is the first student-athlete from ECU cross country/track & field teams to earn All-America honors and is the eighth for the Tigers in school history. He joins softball’s Emily Kennemer (2012 First); Autumn Suydam (2016 First/2015 Second; Mariah Ewy (2018/Third), soccer’s Deanna Rudasill (2016 Third), football’s Courtney Karner (2003 Second), Ashley Cardwell from women’s golf (Women’s At-Large 2013, Second) and baseball’s Nick Spini (2015 Second) as Academic All-Americans.
