Bulldog soccer chosen as GAC preseason favorite

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.  – SWOSU Soccer has been selected as the preseason favorite in the Great American Conference for the 2018 season according to a poll of the league coaches. The conference office announced the preseason poll on Tuesday afternoon.

SWOSU received five first-place votes and sits at the top of the poll with 35 points after winning the GAC Tournament and advancing to the Central Region Championship match in the NCAA Tournament last season.

The Bulldogs look to defend their conference title as head coach Mark Persson brings back four all-conference players from last year’s team in Sandra Nabweteme, Erica Brunet, Sarah Wilson and reigning GAC Offensive Player of the Year Alimata Rabo.

“The expectations are high this season,” Persson said. “Our girls were happy with last year and what they accomplished, but they want more so the expectation is to win the conference tournament, get ourselves back in the national tournament and make a run there.”

The Bulldogs will begin their 2018 campaign on Aug. 30 against the defending National Champions and preseason No. 1-ranked team in NCAA Division II, Central Missouri at the SWOSU Soccer Field.
