7 Sooners make preseason all-Big 12 team

soonersports.com

NORMAN–  A league-high seven Oklahoma Sooners, representing eight spots, were named to the 2018 Preseason All-Big 12 Football Team that was announced Wednesday by the conference and chosen by media representatives who cover the league.

Junior running back Rodney Anderson, junior wide receiver Marquise Brown, sophomore tight end Grant Calcaterra, junior offensive lineman Bobby Evans, senior offensive lineman Ben Powers and senior kicker/punter Austin Seibert were among the 29 players who were named to the all-league squad by position. Freshman defensive back Brendan Radley-Hiles was named Preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.

Oklahoma’s eight overall selections were three more than the team with the next most (West Virginia). The Sooners also boast six offensive picks, which are twice as many the Mountaineers, who have the second most.

The 2018 preseason Big 12 media poll will be released Thursday.

RODNEY ANDERSON (RB • 6-1 • 220 • R-Jr.)

With 1,161 yards on the ground last year, Anderson is the Big 12’s second-leading returning rusher. In his first full season, the 2017 second-team All-Big 12 selection started OU’s final seven games and led the Sooners with 18 total touchdowns on the year. Over the last eight contests, he racked up 1,333 yards from scrimmage (166.6 average) with 16 scores. He found the end zone four times on two different occasions — home wins over TCU and West Virginia — and concluded the season with a 201-yard rushing effort and two TDs against Georgia in the College Football Playoff at the Rose Bowl.

MARQUISE BROWN (WR • 5-10 • 168 • Jr.)

Brown burst onto the scene in 2017 following one year of junior college. The blazing-fast wideout started eight of his 13 games last year and caught 57 passes for a team-high 1,095 yards (eighth most in single-season school history) and seven touchdowns to earn honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. Brown set the school record for receiving yards in a game when he caught nine passes for 265 yards (29.4 average) and two scores in a win at Oklahoma State.

GRANT CALCATERRA (TE • 6-4 • 221 • So.)

Calcaterra played behind unanimous All-American tight end Mark Andrews last season, but still made a mark as a true freshman. The athletic tight end played in all 14 games and made 10 catches for 162 yards (16.2 average), three of them for touchdowns.

BOBBY EVANS (OL • 6-5 • 301 • R-Jr.)

A two-time honorable mention All-Big 12 selection, Evans has played in 26 games at right tackle the last two seasons and has started all of them.

BEN POWERS (OL • 6-4 • 313 • Sr.)

Powers earned second-team All-Big 12 honors from the AP in 2016 and from the league’s head coaches in 2017. He has played in 25 games at left and right guard the last two seasons (primarily left guard), and has made 22 starts.

AUSTIN SEIBERT (K/P • 6-4 • 313 • Sr.)

Seibert makes the 2018 preseason all-league team as both a kicker and punter. The senior, who needs just 90 points to become OU’s all-time leading scorer, was a second-team All-Big 12 pick as a kicker last year after making 17 of his 21 field goal attempts (81.0 percent) and all 81 of his PATs. Included was a stretch of 12 consecutive field goal makes from Oct. 14 to Dec. 2. As a punter, he earned honorable mention all-conference acclaim last season and second-team honors in 2015. He ranks fifth in OU career history with his 41.8 yards per punt.

BRENDAN RADLEY-HILES (DB • 5-9 • 186 • Fr.)

An early enrollee who went through spring practice, Radley-Hiles was a U.S. Army All-American as a senior last year at IMG Academy, earned five-star status by Rivals and was its No. 17 overall recruit and No. 2 cornerback. He intercepted five passes last season and forced two fumbles.
